A Man in A Women's World

The Balance of Masculine and Feminine Energies in The Home.

I had lunch with a friend the other day, and we talked about my recent post on mindful awareness. We discussed how, at the end of a long day, walking into a home filled with family can sometimes feel overwhelming and even triggering. For me, it’s the shift from “work mode” to “mom mode,” with little hands grabbing at me, making their demands. My friend’s experience, while rooted in a similar emotion, was different. He’s a man, a father, and a husband, and his children are older—basically almost adults. For him, the transition was about navigating energy dynamics; his household, made up of his wife and two daughters, felt like walking into a wall of strong feminine energy.

As a woman, I reflected on all the spaces I’ve had to enter that carried intense masculine energy—boardrooms, meeting spaces, etc. At times, these environments felt isolating and restrictive, as if my presence and energy were overshadowed by a weight I couldn’t meet. While I believe every person holds both masculine and feminine qualities, we're often conditioned to express one more freely.

My friend’s question was so valid: “What practice is there for me to feel at ease walking into a windstorm of feminine energy?” Many of our homes are shaped by the energies within them, and navigating these can be a challenge. Do we connect and match the dominant energy, hold our ground, or find a balance? For me, the answer often lies in balance—balancing breathwork, and balancing my own energies by connecting to the one I feel most disconnected from.

So, dear friend, I have a breathwork practice for you—stay tuned. For now, close your eyes wherever you are, feel your sit bones grounding into your chair, and take a moment to connect with the feminine energy within your own body. Find the softness, the receptivity, the intuition, the creative and nurturing energy deep within. It’s there for you too, and it’s worth embracing.

I have a deep appreciation for the masculine—the strength, the logic, the assertiveness, and the focus. I wouldn’t be as productive or successful without it, and sometimes, one energy must extend beyond the other for survival.

I hope your home can be a place where both energies blend and flow, teaching us to honor both within ourselves. By doing so, we can raise assertive creatives and logical nurturers who understand the balance within.
